Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Blue to resume flights

Tags: Flights

Qantas, Jetstar and Pacific Blue will resume most flights tomorrow after disruptions caused by the ash cloud.

Virgin subsidiary Pacific Blue will resume its trans-Tasman services.

Qantas flights and Jetstar will recommence flights to all New Zealand centres, apart from Wellington, from early Monday morning.

An announcement on Wellington flights is to be made early on Monday morning.

Australian domestic and international services continue to operate as normal.

The ash cloud from the Chile’s Mt Puyehue Cordon Caulle volcano has caused days of delays for travellers with Qantas and subsidiary Jetstar cancelling flights.

Air New Zealand, Emirates and several other international carriers have continued to operate with minimal cancellations by altering flight paths and flying at lower altitudes to avoid the ash.

However avoiding the ash cloud has not been without problems for Air New Zealand. Flying at lower altitudes uses around 10% more fuel.

Some 150 passengers flying from Rarotonga arrived at their destination without their luggage.

The airline said the omission was due to a combination of bad weather and weight restrictions due to having to carry extra fuel.
