Find free entertainment in New York

Tags: New York, York

There is plenty for visitors to New York to see and do.

Travellers keen to visit New York but save money at the same time should be pleased to hear there are many cheap and free activities to enjoy.

An article in the Shropshire Star tells travel insurance policyholders and others that there is plenty to do in the city that never sleeps.

It advises planning ahead and avoiding the major holiday weekends in order to get the best deals on flights.

Tourists can fly directly from the UK into JFK International or LaGuardia Airport in approximately eight hours.

To get into the city centre it is possible to get a taxi, although buses offer good deals at just a couple of dollars per trip.

“New York is full of cheap or even free entertainment.

“A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge gives a great view of the city and you can visit the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Museum of Natural History for free,” the article notes.

Once there, there is plenty to explore and those keen to head further afield could consider taking the Staten Island Ferry to get a fantastic view of Manhattan at no cost.

It takes 25 minutes to travel between the two islands and the ferry has been running for 100 years, offering visitors a taste of history as well as stunning scenery, the news source adds.

Simply walking around New York can be interesting and exciting for tourists, as well as being completely free of charge.

Times Square, the Empire State Building and Broadway are among the most popular destinations for travellers to see.

Same delay, different month.

The Nolitan in NYC’s Nolita nabe has pushed back its opening yet another month, making it the EIGHTH TIME this hotel has been delayed and we have to say we’re growing tired of this game.

The Nolitan first promised to open in May of 2010, followed by June, August, November, late November, February 15, March, and then April 4. Now the reservation’s site is saying May 11 with rooms starting at an introductory rate of $289 a night for a small room with a king bed.

That’s actually a very good deal if you plan on being in NYC in early May.

Climb Scratchmere Scar this year

Tags: Scar, Scratchmere Scar

Good news is here for all those climbers who cannot wait to strap their boots on their feet and head off on an invigorating hike over Easter – Scratchmere Scar in the Eden Valley is now open to the public for a bit of an adventure.

Now, anyone who chooses to book cottages in the Lake District can set off over the crag, thanks to an agreement between landowner Marshalls and the British Mountaineering Council (BMC).

However, thrill-seekers eager to enjoy some of the great outdoors have been reminded that they must accept they are on the Scar at their own risk, with access only permitted across a track from the farm situated below the crag and the crag itself, not to the land beyond that.

“The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death,” the organisation observed, adding that walkers must be “responsible for their own actions”.

Hikers were originally banned from climbing both the Scar and The Hoff in Eden Valley in November last year, according to the Fell & Rock Climbing Club.

Air New Zealand’s new “Fit to Fly” safety video featuring US fitness legend Richard Simmons and former Breakfast presenter Paul Henry, has been viewed more than a million times on YouTube. In the video, launched three days ago, Henry wears orange shorts and a pink sweat band and jokes about it not being the first time he has been told not to broadcast, when Simmons catches him using his phone on the plane. Henry resigned from his presenting role after an uproar over racial comments he made on the show. The clip is currently the number 1 most viewed video on YouTube in Australia and New Zealand, number 2 in the USA and a staggering number 4 worldwide. Read full topic…
